Redefining Freedom of Religion

Let me get this straight...Muslims murder 10 civilian Christian aid workers in Afghanistan last month in cold blood, Muslims continue to try blowing airplanes out of the sky with shoe bombs or whatever, Muslims sneak onto military bases to kill CIA agents by suicide bomb, two planes operated by Muslims destroy the Twin Towers in NYC, (incidentally killing well over 3,000 people),and another airplane hijacked by Muslims almost destroy the Pentagon, yet American politicians have their panties in a wad over a couple of hundred copies of the Koran being burned in Florida?

Get me back on the bus - I got off at the wrong stop!

General David Petraeus fears it will put our troops in danger. What are they in now? Not in mama's arms, that's for sure! President Obama states that, if  Florida Pastor Terry Jones goes through with burning copies of the Koran on the 9/11 anniversary, it will be a "recruiting bonanza" for Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. They didn't seem to have any recruitment problems prior to Sept. 11, 2001. There were no problems with recruitment when the USS Cole was bombed at a harbor in Yemen. Besides, Mr. President, what happened to the toast of New York City, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, having a perfect right to " freedom of religion and speech as anyone else in this country."; yet Terry Jones does not have that right?

Last time I looked, the Jehovah's Witnesses weren't bombing any subway stations, the members of the Baha'i faith weren't murdering aid workers and Southern Baptists weren't planting roadside bombs to kill and maim soldiers. Well, who in hell is doing it then???

J.D. Salinger's novel, Catcher in the Rye, has been burned, Ulysses, by James Joyce has been burned and the D.H. Lawrence book, Lady Chatterley's Lover have all been burned. I don't remember novelists attacking any particular edifice or group over those incidents.

Liberals and the politically correct might say," Yeah, but it's only a small group of Islamic extremists that are doing these things." Great, then let the large group of moderates shut down the small group! If they feel the extremists are giving them and their religion a bad name, let the moderates condemn and deal with them. Ain't gonna happen! Islam ,as a whole, does nothing but give tacit approval for every suicide bombing and every murder and every attack which takes place, either here or abroad.

Here's a great idea: Why don't we just arm our military in Iraq and Afghanistan with BB and paintball guns? That way, we won't be hurting anyone's feelings! And that is our primary goal, both here and abroad, to not hurt anyone's feelings. Don't dare burn those books, Pastor Jones! Even though next week, perhaps, a plane carrying 300 passengers may be blow out of the sky by a bomb carried by a Muslim terrorist. That wouldn't hurt our feelings; but burning paper will hurt theirs!

I went to sleep in the United States of America; I feel as if I woke up in the United States of Appeasement. I'm going back to bed.

"Muslims murder 10 civilian Christian aid workers in Afghanistan" - do not try to go convert people who do not want to be converted or you might get in trouble.

"Muslims sneak onto military bases to kill CIA agents by suicide bomb" - that is an outcome easy to prevent if you do not go invading countries.

"General David Petraeus fears it will put our troops in danger. What are they in now? Not in mama's arms, that's for sure!" - adding fuel to a fire that you are trying to put out is not the brightest idea.

If I catch someone burning "The Catcher in the Rye" I'm taking the gloves off! I love that book lol

A) Operative word, 'aid', not 'missionary' workers.

B) Invasion was reciprocal based on an invasive attack.

C) The fire has burned since the 1970's. No chance of

putting it out soon.

So, perhaps the BB and paintball idea would not be so bad?

Dittos on J.D.'s book! A feast of words!

Thanks for coming by!

If you are aiding in the name of Christianity that is a way of promoting your faith. If you want to truly help/volunteer, do it in your name - not in the name of some religion.

Invasion was not reciprocal. Saddam did not invade the U.S. and even Afghanistan did not invade the U.S. - Canada invaded the United States once, when we burned the White House down (it is called the White House because it got painted in white after). Invade us! It's more convinient on both sides, I'd say.

Saying that the fire has been burning since the '70s and that there is "no chance of putting it out soon" sounds like giving up.

Quote from the Koran:9:5 "Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive)and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush, but if they repent and establish worship (to Allah)and pay the poor due, then leave their way free."

If the Christian workers were proselytizing with their actions and paid with their lives, evidently, the Muslims were proselytizing as well.

Personally, I prefer the former type over the latter.

The gist of the hub was this: First Amendment protection noted by President Obama was extended to a group who, by the Koran, are also linked to the 9/11 attacks. Pastor Jones, wanted to burn this link in a symbolic gesture; which, also is under First Amendment protection.

One wants to build an edifice, which many see as an insult to America. The other, wanted to burn a book, the perceived driving motivation behind the attacks, which would be an insult to Islam.

Whether a hawk sees a building, flag or book burning as a symbolic insult or a dove sees the same or none as an insult, the point is that both are forms of speech. The hawk may not like what the dove likes, but both are protected. One planned act was condemned, the other was not. When a president chooses one over the other, free speech limitations may not be far behind. It is political correctness on steroids.

If he personally stayed out of one, he should have stayed out of the other.

The Koran quote is also why the fire will not soon be extinguished.

I will come back to this (I do not have much time now - gotta run out) later what I do want to say though, from a Humanities/Philosophy major point of view is that religious texts should never be taken litterally, word by word and never should a phrase or a sentence be taken out of the whole context of the book (whatever the book is, Bible, Qu'ran, etc.).

"1 Corinthians 11:5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved." - If we are to interpret everything word by word from religious books our world would turn completely insane. Such texts are philosophical works, which try to teach people how to live a better life but they are by no means perfect in any way.

Mr. Happy-

Explain that to the 7th Century mindset of religious ideologists who decapitate people in front of video machines and distribute it on a 21st Century internet web. Philosophy is theoretical. Bullets, be-headings and bombs are reality.

Depending upon which side of an issue one is on, the other side always takes things out of context...always.

That is why religions are dangerous and should be kept to people's homes and private lives. Religion should be banned out of public life!
